Borderlands 3’s Rhys Is Being Voiced By Final Fantasy 15’s Noctis

Ray Chase will be replacing Troy Baker as Rhys in the upcoming looter shooter.

We’ve known for a while now that Troy Baker won’t be reprising his role as Rhys from Tales from the Borderlands when the character reappears in the upcoming Borderlands 3 (which is something that has led to a curious mini-back and forth between the actor and Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford). Now, though, we know exactly who it is who’ll be replacing him.

Baker will be replaced by Ray Chase, who’s best known for voicing Final Fantasy 15 protagonist Noctis (among many, many other voice acting roles in games and anime). Chase recently took to Twitter to make the announcement, while also saying that he admired Baker’s “hilarious” portrayal of Rhys in Telltale’s Tales from the Borderlands, and that the actor was “a true inspiration” to him. Chase also confirmed that Borderlands 3’s Rhys was a new interpretation of the character, suggesting that you shouldn’t expect his take on the character to sound too much like Baker’s performance.

We’ve learned a great deal more about Borderlands 3 since yesterday thanks to its latest gameplay reveal. In addition to being treated to hours of gameplay footage, we also have the confirmation that Borderlands 3 has no microtransactions, and that the game’s campaign will be at least 30 hours long. Meanwhile, the developers have also said that they’re targeting 60 FPS for the game on the Xbox One X (and presumably on the PS4 Pro as well).

Borderlands 3 is out on September 13 for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
