Borderlands 3 DRM Concerns Are Valid, Says Producer

Borderlands 3 isn’t even out yet, and already its PC release has come under fire to some extent from the series’ fans. Not only is the game going to be exclusive to the Epic Games Store on PC – which is controversial enough – due to that exclusivity, it’s also not going to allow pre-loads. On top of that, we also recently learned that the game will make use of Denuvo DRM, which especially has annoyed a bunch of people.

As far as its usage of Denuvo DRM is concerned, though, the developers feel like the concerns of of the playerbase are valid. Speaking with PCGamesN, produce Chris Brock said that people’s concerns are certainly not without merit, but that Gearbox are attempting to make sure that the game’s usage of DRM doesn’t impede players- those who are purchasing the game legitimately, that is.

“A lot of the criticism people have of DRM – on some level it’s valid,” he said.

“What we try to do is ensure that this [DRM] should not impede a person. “We don’t want a situation where a person who pirated the game has an easier time than someone who bought the game legitimately. That’s kind of our litmus test, is that it can’t be in the way.”

Often games end up removing Denuvo DRM a few months after their launch, so the hope remains that that will happen for Borderlands 3 as well. Either way, the looter shooter is out in less than a month, on September 13, for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
