Borderlands 3 is going to be upon us very soon, but it could have potentially come at a much later date. While it’s been quite a long wait between the last game in the series, The Pre-Sequel, but that wait was cut down thanks to Gearbox use of Unreal Engine 4.

In speaking with the PlayStation Blog, Online & Social Product Owner, Scott Velasquez spoke about the game’s development. He mentioned the graphics options, which you can read about here, but also about the game’s development cycle. He said that Borderlands 2 and Pre-Sequel were using a heavily modified version of Unreal Engine 3. With the third game they switched over fully to Unreal Engine 4. Thanks to that, the developer managed to slice off a potential two or three more years of active development.

Thankfully, that switchover means we’ll get Borderlands 3 very soon, when it launches for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC this September. We’ll also get an idea of what post-launch content will be like later in August.
