If there’s one thing that Assassin’s Creed has always excelled at, even when it’s been at its low points, it’s how authentically it recreates it historically-inspired settings, and that’s something that the series has been leaning into more heavily than ever in recent years, especially with the Discovery Tour Mode in the last few instalments. While it remains to be seen whether the mode will make a return in the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Mirage, history buffs will still find some interesting things to dive into.

Ubisoft has revealed the new History of Baghdad feature for Assassin’s Creed Mirage, which will allow players to dive into “expertly curated information on the history, art, and culture of Baghdad and the Abbasid Caliphate circa the ninth century.”

True to Assassin’s Creed Mirage’s nature as an homage to earlier games in the franchise, History of Baghdad will be included in the game as part of its in-game codex, like Databses in the older games, and will also be tied to player progression.

Protagonist Basim will be tasked with visiting 66 historical sites scattered throughout the open world map of Baghdad, which will unlock “research-driven articles” that will cover five topics related to Baghdad in the ninth century, those being economy, belief and daily life, art and science, court life, and government. Once the database is completed, players will also receive an in-game reward.

The feature is developed by a team of Ubisoft historians at Ubisoft Montreal, led by Dr. Raphaël Weyland, an expert in Middle Eastern history. It was developed in collaboration with a number of external historians and institutions, and makes use of images provided by a number of partner museums around the world. Check out the images below for a glimpse of what the feature will have in store.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage launches on October 12 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
