60 FPS Seems Like the Least Likely Option for PS5 and Xbox Series X – Scorn Dev

Scorn director Ljubomir Peklar says that though 60 FPS will be ideal, it's unlikely that that will become the standard.

New console generations always bring about better looking games as a rule, and while that’s something that we can obviously expect with the PS5 and the Xbox Series X, we’re starting to get to a point where many feel like perhaps it’s time for developers across the industry to focus on better performance instead of shinier visuals, especially as we hit diminishing returns. Microsoft, in fact, have openly talked about how the Xbox Series X will prioritize performance, and that 60 FPS will be the targeted standard output for next-gen games. But is that something that’s actually going to happen, or is it just a pipe dream?

Speaking to us in a recent interview, Ebb Software’s Ljubomir Peklar – developer of the upcoming first person horror game Scorn – spoke to us about the advantages that next-gen consoles’ more powerful hardware could present, while also speaking about what it might mean for frame rates in games going forward.

“If developers decide to build the games only for the new hardware then it will have certain advantages compared to being cross-gen,” Peklar said to GamingBolt. “Scaling can go quite far, but not indefinitely, before it starts performing poorly on the lowest hardware and limiting what can be done on the highest hardware.”

According to Peklar though next-gen games running at 60 frames per second is, of course, the ideal solution, it is unlikely that that will become an industry standard.

“On the other hand, your shiny new graphics will once again probably come at a cost of frame rate,” he said. “It depends on what you prefer. If cross-gen games go for 60 FPS on next-gen, I would find that favorable. If they just opt for more graphical fidelity and 30 FPS, then you would get better results, if the game was built from ground up for the new hardware. Ideally you would want a 60 FPS game build for next-gen, but that seems like the least likely option.”

In the same interview, Peklar also spoke to us about why Scorn is a console exclusive for the Xbox Series X. Read more on that through here. Our full interview with Peklar will be going live soon, so stay tuned for that.
